MORE BETTER

Festival Experiences

Detroit, USA. October 20th-23rd, 2022

The films are the heart of the festival, but we take it beyond the screen. Better Cities Film Festival is an opportunity for the community of people who work on making our cities, towns, and neighborhoods better (community workers and activists, placemakers, planners, architects, developers, artists, entrepreneurs, government leaders) to come together to celebrate cities, experience their nooks and crannies, learn from each other, and have a lot of fun. These talks, tours, and social events are the festival experiences we call More Better.

The Detroit People Mover is the city’s much-maligned conversation piece of an incomplete public transit system in downtown Detroit. Providing 2,413,414 rides in 2015 (and 268,900 in 2020), it hides secrets, fantastic art, heritage sites, and even a three hundred-year-old artifact throughout its 2.9-mile loop. The People Mover is a driverless, fully-automated, rapid transit line that travels a one-way loop through the heart of the City. The total round trip time is only 14 minutes- so let's be honest- you’re not traveling that far but the amount you’ll learn will leave you shocked, awed, and happily proclaiming “all hail the DPM”. On this hour and a half tour, you’ll see millions of dollars of artwork that was included in the 13 stations after one woman's successful quest to save Detroit from cookie cutter identical stations. You'll learn why the train originally ran clockwise, see the man who has spent the last three decades reading the exact same paper, and finally, understand why Detroit has its very own Times Square. We hope you'll come along and leave with a whole new appreciation for the historic Detroit People Mover.
